Glossary of Terms


  • Slow Speed Taxi from pit area to runway
    Slow and controlled taxi of the aircraft from the pit area to take off position on the runway


  • Sustained Straight and Level Flight
    Ability to fly straight and level within the flight pattern


  • Right and Left Turns and Circles
    The ability to make right and left hand turns and right and left hand circles while staying within the flight boundaries and maintaining altitude.


  • Pre flight inspection
    You should always do a pre flight inspection of your aircraft. Included in your student pilots package is a checklist, which lists the things, you should look for. This checklist is also available on the clubs web site.


  • Climb and Descend and Return to Level Flight
    The ability to climb, (gain altitude) descend (loose altitude) and return the aircraft to level flight.


  • Figure Eights While Maintaining Altitude
    Perform a right and left hand turn that intersect while maintaining the same altitude throughout the maneuver


  • Flight with varying throttle settings
    Fly the aircraft with different throttle settings while maintaining altitude and full control.


  • Slow Speed Stall & Recovery
    Raise the nose of the aircraft to a slight climb reduce throttle to idle while continually adding up elevator until the aircraft stalls (the aircraft is no longer flying and will drop its nose). Let the aircrafts speed increase add power and up elevator together and return to level flight.


  • Steep turns and figure eights
    Ability to make high banked turns and figure eights while maintaining altitude and complete control.


  • Climbing and descending right and left hand turns
    Ability to make climbing and descending turns without losing control of the aircraft and maintaining a smooth transition to level flight.


  • Coordinated Turns
    Using both rudder and aileron simultaneously to perform both right and left hand turns. This is combined with the use of elevator to maintain altitude.


  • Rudder only turns
    Using rudder only no ailerons to perform both right and left hand turns. This is combined with the use of elevator to maintain altitude.


  • High Speed Taxi Without Wing
    High-speed taxis straight down the centerline of the runway while maintaining complete control. This is in preparation for takeoff.


  • Steady Take Off with Good Control
    Takeoff run, straight down the center of the runway liftoff with low rate of climb straight out. Initial turn must be away from the pit area. Takeoffs must be performed in both directions.


  • Flying a Steady Pattern
    Takeoff, initial turn away from the pits, reduce throttle, and fly the flight pattern. The flight pattern is straight and level flight parallel to the runway with both right and left hand turns while maintaining heading and altitude.


  • Simulated Approaches
    Landing approach descending turns at a comfortable altitude as comfort level increases these approach turns will become lower in preparation for landing.


  • Smooth Controlled Landings
    Ability to land the aircraft within fifteen feet of the centerline coming to a complete controlled stop. Landings must be performed from both directions.


  • Touch and Goes
    Make an approach to a landing once the wheels have touched increase throttle and climb out.


  • Simulated Dead Sticks
    An engine out causes a dead stick landing. Your instructor will tell you when you have lost your engine and you will proceed to do a simulated dead stick landing.
